Accountant, CPA

Public Practice | Duncan, British Columbia

[$75,000 – $90,000] | Full time, permanent | In office with flexibility for when life happens.

Odyssey People Partners is proud to be partnering with ENSO Accounting & Tax on the search for a CPA to join their team in the Cowichan Valley.

Before anything else, here is what makes this role different from every other public practice job on Vancouver Island or the Mainland.

No business development. This is well taken care of by your leaders, the Founders of ENSO. You will not be asked to network, pitch, or build a book, you will be given the work you know and are good at. The client base is established and grows on referral. Your job is to serve it well.

No busy season death march. ENSO staffs and schedules so that tax season is a busy stretch, not a crisis. Loyalty is not measured in evenings and weekends here, Kevin and Victor want you to thrive all year round.

Vacation you actually take. Salaried team members have untracked time off. No accrual balance, no counting days, no negotiating for a week in July. Plan it with the team and go, you're a professioal Accountant, you know when it makes sense and when it is all hands on deck.

A day that fits a life. Drop the kids off. Book the chiro, the physio, the dentist. Do the work and be a healthy adult about it.

About ENSO

ENSO is led by Victor and Kevin Gamble, a father son team with deep roots in Duncan and the Cowichan Valley. Together they have built a firm known for sophisticated corporate and tax expertise, strong client relationships and a genuine connection to the community they serve.

The firm works with individuals, entrepreneurs and small businesses across Vancouver Island, the mainland and Alberta, delivering high quality accounting, tax and advisory support with a personal approach.

The team is small, tight and family feeling. People cover for each other. Nobody is precious about their files.

The work: You would be stepping into an established book with real depth. The corporate side is largely owner managed small business with meaningful concentration in construction and the trades across Vancouver Island, B.C and Alberta. The personal tax book is substantial and includes complex individual and family files. There is also an active bookkeeping and payroll practice that intersects with the year end work. There is no shortage of work here and no pressure to go find more of it.

Day to day that looks like:

  • preparation and review of corporate year end files and financial statements
  • personal tax preparation and review across a wide range of individual and family situations
  • corporate tax preparation, compilations and T2 filings for owner managed businesses
  • construction and trades files including holdbacks, work in progress, percentage of completion and subcontractor compliance
  • personal and corporate tax planning, remuneration mix, GST and PST, and CRA correspondence and reviews
  • acting as a direct and trusted point of contact for clients who have often been with the firm for years

The right person

  • is a CPA in good standing with meaningful Canadian public practice experience
  • has owned files, not just prepared schedules
  • is strong on personal tax and comfortable on corporate year ends for owner managed businesses
  • works confidently in CaseWare
  • is self sufficient. You can take a file, work it and bring it back complete. You know when to ask and you ask early.
  • deals with clients plainly and warmly, with technical expertise and relationship at the heart of everything ENSO offers
  • wants to be part of a collaborative and community focused team

Construction or trades experience is an asset. Experience reviewing or mentoring junior staff is welcome but not required.

How you grow: this is not a partner track sales role, it is also not an entry level position. ENSO is looking for a passionate and capable professional who can hit the ground running. If you want to grow into a senior or leadership role over time, that path is genuinely available. It will be earned through the quality of your work, the character you bring to the team and not the size of a book you bring in on day one.

Compensation and benefits:

  • competitive salary of [$75,000 – $90,000] commensurate with experience so happy to discuss this with the right candidate
  • extended health and dental
  • Health Spending Account
  • untracked vacation for salaried staff, paid out or accrued vacation for hourly staff
  • CPA dues and professional development support
  • real flexibility around family, appointments and health

And yes, there is the small matter of where you would be living...

The Cowichan Valley offers world class hiking, mountain biking, lakes, ocean, wineries and year round outdoor living. Victoria, Tofino and Mt. Washington are all within reach. It is one of the most unique places in Canada to build both a career and a life. We understand that you can get the scenery and standard of living at a lot of firms on this Island. What you cannot get everywhere is a firm that means it when it says take your time off, build a life and feel valued doing it.

If this sounds like the kind of opportunity you have been looking for, apply now.
